Certified Copy(Copie Conforme) by Abbas Kiarostami

The question that I can’t help asking myself after watching this movie, is why Kiarostami wanted to make it so hard for the audience.

Some people mentioned Rossellini to speak of this film but I don’t see anything of him in it. Instead I saw an attempt by Kiarostami to a very enigmatic approach to tell a story, similar to the way that Alan Resnais can get really convoluted to the point of total confusion of the viewer, who then would be released by a sudden revelation in the plot. The problem is that Kiarostami doesn’t have any of the deconstructionist poetry or the astounding visual beauty of Resnais.

Maybe I simply couldn’t appreciate the sophisticated psychological shift, used by the characters to somehow enforce and give a form, an identity to their theoretical reasoning, some critics defined it playful, I found it quite forced. In my opinion it really takes the magic of an incredible screenplay and the strength of the devastating interpretation of the actors (can we say Cassavetes?), to not make a theatrical monologue like this, so inconsistent and weak.

What is this movie about? Is it a simple tale of humanity, in the way of Rohmer’s “Six Moral Tales”? The pleasant landscapes of Tuscany that unfold to the viewer during the movie seem to grasp for simplicity and minimalism. Unfortunately also in this case neither the dialogues or the atmosphere has anything of the lightheartedness of that cinema.

After watching the movie and Reading the reviews, I can’t help to jump to the conclusion that the explanation of the movie seems to be better than the movie itself. But as a piece of visual art this shouldn’t be necessary, I feel like the movie should substantiate itself of his own strength.

Years ago a great musician said that he didn’t like complicated things, because he felt like complication is satisfied with itself, where simplicity always leave space for interaction. This movie seems to be case to me.
